All (Bel) Abord!

Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine is one of my favorite summer wines. Terrific, Alison, so why are you writing about it in the heart of the holiday season?! Because, some of us eat a whole lot of seafood over the holidays, and if raw oysters are in your repertoire, say for Seven Fishes? This is your wine!

Muscadet —or Melon de Bourgogne, that’s the name of the grape—is the PERFECT oyster wine. This is no secret. Sommeliers and wine critics have written about this for decades, but this Bel Abord Muscadet is extra special for a few reasons:

  1. It’s from Sèvre-et-Maine, in the lower Loire Valley, just southeast of Nantes.

  2. It’s just $18.99 on wine.com. What a value!

  3. 80% of all Muscadets come from Sèvre-et-Maine.

  4. Muscadets from Sèvre-et-Maine have a stunning brioche or bready note from the sur lie aging (aging on the lees: dead yeast cells), which makes them a bit fuller and perfect for this time  of year.

  5. Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine is a dry white wine, not sweet; you’re confusing it with Muscat or Moscato.
