Should you decant your wine?

$50 Le Chateau decanter

To Decant or Not To Decant?
That is the question…

It's actually a question a friend asked me recently.
So here are some decanting basics:

Decanting Pros:
-Opens up a tight wine so you can better smell its aromas and taste its flavors
-Mellows out the tannins in a wine
-Captures cleaner wine while the sediment stays back in the wine bottle
-Looks really beautiful on a table, so use one as a carafe
-Hides the fact that you bought cheap wine for your dinner guests

Decanting Cons:
-Kills bubbles in Champagne, so don't use one for sparkling wines
-Won’t reduce alcohol content, so if your wine is too "hot" or "strong," don't try to lower the ABV with a decanter
-May over-oxidize an older wine, so proceed with caution

There are tons of different types of decanters, and some are really fancy, but this one from Le Chateau is a liquor.com favorite, gets the job done well, and is just $50 on amazon.com
