Bud Break

It’s been a minute since I’ve posted… a “break” if you will.
I spent some time in California last month: enjoying Central Coast wines & vineyards (much more on that to come), running the 40th Los Angeles Marathon (my 21st!), and soaking up some sun.

This week, the buds are breaking in the vineyards of California and France, so I’m ending my break with lots of content on the way.

So, what is bud break?

Basically the start of the 2025 growth cycle—the beginning of the next vintage:

  1. In the vineyards, bud break or bud burst is the appearance of new growth.

  2. During bud break, a vine's buds start to open and leaves or flowers appear.

  3. In the Northern Hemisphere, bud break typically happens in March or April, when temperatures rise above 50°F.

  4. Bud break is happening right now in California & France.
