Don’t Tell Me You Don’t Like Chardonnay…
…Cause when it’s French, it’s delicious!
People tell me all the time that they don’t like Chardonnay because it’s oaky and buttery and too heavy and cloying. Those things can all be true with American Chardonnays, but they usually aren’t an issue when you’re drinking Chardonnay from France.
This Louis Latour Pouilly-Fuissé 2022, a Chardonnay from Burgundy, is a great one to try. For starters, it’s unoaked. It also has a pale straw color that tells you right away you’re not diving into a butter bomb. It smells crisp and fresh, with the most delicate buttercream & lemon cream fragrance underneath. It tastes crisp and fresh too, like tart lemons with nice minerality and a long, soft finish.
This wine was great with lemon dill salmon and spinach, and surprisingly lovely with the dark chocolate covered Swedish fish candy I popped into my mouth for dessert. It’s $34.99 on Wine.com. Not cheap, but a beautiful wine in the $30 range.
Reminder: Pouilly-Fuissé is always Chardonnay. To learn more about it, and the differences between Pouilly-Fumé and Pouilly-Fuissé, check out my post from May 7th, 2024: Pouilly-Fumé vs. Pouilly-Fuissé.
