Drink This, If You Don’t Usually Drink Sauvignon Blanc

While I appreciate a good Sauvignon Blanc, it’s rarely the first white wine I buy or order, but this La Craie 2021 Pouilly Fumé might change that.

Why, you ask?

Well, for starters, it’s fantastic.
It has a beautiful pale straw color with soft yellow highlights.
The typical “green” aromas you get with a Sauvignon Blanc are muted here…very little grass or green pepper.
Instead this SB smells like white flowers, white stone, a little slate, and apple core, with hints of peaches and those Jordan almonds you used to get as wedding favors.

It’s aged on the lees (dead yeast cells) which gives this wine all sorts of softness and complexity.
Sauvignon Blancs aren’t usually aged on the lees, which makes this guy unique.
It’s tart and tastes a bit like seashell, again, with very little of the green notes you’d typically associate with a Sauvignon Blanc.

It’s a Pouilly-Fumé, which means it’s from Pouilly-Fumé—a region in the Loire Valley.
Pouilly-Fumé is always made with Sauvignon Blanc grapes.
The slate and apple I smelled are common P-F aromas.
Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre are the best known Sauvignon Blancs from the Loire Valley.
While Sancerre is probably the most famous, I prefer Pouilly-Fumé’s softness.

This wine would be great this summer with fish, chicken, or salty white cheese… or totally lovely on its own.

A really elegant white wine for your next evening outside with friends, for $24.99 on wine.com.
This is a great pick for Sauvignon Blanc lovers and skeptics alike!
