Margaux
Margaux isn’t typically the region for Bordeaux bargains, but there are some fabulous 2022 wines here, almost all under $100:
Château Brane-Cantenac $89.99
Château Cantenac-Brown $59.99
Château Dauzac $56.99
Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry $69.99
Château Prieuré-Lichine $49.99
Château Rauzan-Ségla $119.99
Château du Tertre (waiting on price. 2023 is $39.99)
Here are my three highlights from the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2022 Margaux:
1️⃣ Château du Tertre (waiting on price)
This might be the bargain buy of the evening. It had nice jammy fruit on the nose, wild blackberry flavors, and soft grippy tannins. It’s insanely drinkable for a wine so young, thanks to a nice blend of Cabernet Franc. I absolutely loved this wine.
(57% Cab S, 23% Cab F, 15% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot)
2️⃣ Château Dauzac $56.99
My dear friend, Arie Pavlou, Chef and Owner of Bistro Été, the best restaurant on the East End of Long Island, could NOT get enough of this wine. He was so excited that you could actually taste the barrel in this wine’s long finish. And he was so right—this finish went on for days, with the tannins dropping out to offer up an incredibly smooth wine. (63% Cab S, 37% Merlot)
3️⃣ Château Rauzan-Ségla $119.99
This was the most expensive of the Margaux I loved, but there’s a lot to love here: beautiful, fresh dark fruit on the nose with light graphite and some peppercorn on the tongue. This wine is elegant and soft with tannins that sit far back on the palate. A stunner. (72% Cab S, 26% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot)
Bonus Note:
4️⃣ Château Prieuré-Lichine $49.99
An outrageous value year after year. Beautifully round with dark cherry and cigar box. This is a wine a recommend regularly.
(65% Cab S, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot)
