Old Vines
Nothing beats the flavor of grapes grown on vines rooted to the earth for decades. You can taste the history with every sip: all that rustic, dusty, delicious goodness.
Recently, to celebrate a special occasion in our house, I cracked open this 2019 Domaine Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin “Vieilles Vignes.”
“Vieilles Vignes” means old vines and they never fail to deliver.
So what is this wine?
Domaine Faiveley is one of my favorite winemakers in Burgundy. Innovative, yet rooted in history, the Faiveley family has been making wine in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, since 1825. Check out this awesome 2 minute interview with Erwan Faiveley to learn more.
Gevrey-Chambertin is exceptional Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy, known to have a medium body and complex flavors. This wine had a gorgeous transparent black cherry-meets-cranberry color. You could smell subtle aromas of bbq and game under a powdery rose fragrance. You can taste the old vines immediately, along with dusty red fruits, like cassis, that are bright and round, not crunchy. This wine is silky and slick, almost slippery, with a nice weight that pairs beautifully with chicken but could stand up to red meat. We had it with rigatoni vodka with bacon and some awesome slightly grippy tannins jumped out.
You can find it online at Blackwell’s Wine & Spirits for $75: a gorgeous bottle for a special occasion.
