Oregon And On
I could go on and on about how good Oregon wines are and how we all need to drink more of them.
Here’s a great white wine from the state:
This 2022 Archery Summit Vireton Pinot Gris is from the Willamette Valley (reminder: Willamette rhymes with damn it). It’s almost white in color with mineral/flinty aromas and a touch of chamomile and blossom. It has bright acidity and a nice saltiness to it, while also being soft and full. James Suckling says this wine has “juicy peach notes.” Once I heard peach, I couldn’t think about any other fruit flavors. This is peach all the way.
🍑 A note on fruit: when someone describes fruit flavors in wine, don’t be fooled into thinking the wine is sweet. A wine can taste similar to a peach or a pear in your mouth without being sugary, just like wine can have tartness that reminds your tastebuds of lemons, without being sour. 🍋
This white wine is awesome with oysters, especially now that it’s cool and Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet) feels a little too light. We had it on the back deck with raw oysters and shrimp cocktail and couldn’t have been happier.
James Suckling and Wine Spectator both give it 90 points. It’s just $19.99 on wine.com.
