Red Sancerre

🍷You “red” that right.

While Sancerre is best known for its Sauvignon Blanc, there is red wine in Sancerre too. It is 100% Pinot Noir, 1000% delicious, and it just might be my new favorite red wine.

Let’s learn a little bit more about Sancerre:

-Sancerre is a region in the Loire Valley in France.
-It’s famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, but how often have you heard someone say, “I don’t like Sauvignon Blanc, but I love Sancerre”? That’s probably because Sancerre can be more refined and less green and grassy than other Sauvignon Blancs, especially Sav Blancs from New Zealand.
-Less than 20% of the wine produced in Sancerre is red, which explains why you might not have known that Sancerre Rouge exists, let alone tried one.

If you’re going to give Sancerre Rouge a go, I highly recommend this 2021 Sancerre from Nicolas Girard. It just catapulted to the top of my Pinot Noir list. It has a beautiful, clear, ruby red color, with aromas of violets, dry hay, some maraschino cherry, strawberry jam, and maybe even some Twizzlers nibs. 😉 It has flavors of fresh, but not entirely crunchy, red fruit, and a touch of tobacco. It’s bright and beautifully smooth. I like it as much as Au Bon Climat, which has been my favorite everyday Pinot Noir for a long time now. I would drink this wine on its own, with chicken, turkey, and definitely mushrooms. (Pinot Noir was practically made for mushrooms.) I randomly popped some chicken gyro in my mouth while tasting this bottle, and it was absolutely lovely. It’s $24.95 on firstbottlewines.com, $22.95 if you buy 6 bottles or more.
