Aperture Sauvignon Blanc
I had the great pleasure of tasting Aperture’s 2023 Sauvignon Blanc with winemaker Jesse Katz last week. There are few things better than learning about a wine from the person who made it…especially when the wine is delicious and its maker is passionate. Even better, when you’re delighted with a wine that’s so unique in its category.
Aperture Sauvignon Blanc is a remarkable white wine—and quite possibly the most complex and fascinating California SB I’ve ever had. It’s heavier than most, with an incredible Chenin Blanc style of viscosity that makes it so much more interesting than your classic, crisp, “pair me with a salad or white fish” Sauvignon Blanc.
Jesse was inspired by the legendary Château Haut-Brion, in Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux. He blended Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes, aged them in new oak, old oak, neutral oak and cement—creating a wine that’s light, yet substantial, and also round, with hints of melon, citrus, and flowers. It reminded me of beautiful sun-filled days in Bordeaux, with a fresh, vibrant California edge. This is a sophisticated, sexy Sauvignon Blanc that would appeal to any white wine drinker.
Available direct from Aperture for $50 a bottle, while it lasts.
