Charmed, I’m Sure
If ever there was a red wine that’s charming with fish, it’s Les Charmes Morgon, a Gamay from Beaujolais. This organic beauty hails from Domaine de la Bonne Tonne, but there are several winemakers producing gorgeous reds from Les Charmes—one of the top vineyard sites in Morgon.
We enjoyed this bottle with shrimp tempura, whole fried red snapper, mixed seafood risotto, yucca fries, broccolini & crispy Brussels sprouts at Mission Ceviche—a very cool Peruvian restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Our dinner companion and dear friend, Armando, has exceptional taste, but doesn’t care much for white wine, so this was the perfect pairing.
Light, crisp, with fresh red fruit and an underlying rustic earthiness that lets you know you’re drinking something Old World, and even better, French. I asked our server to put the bottle on ice to bring it a bit below room temperature: the perfect way to enjoy Beaujolais in summer.
This bottle from Bonne Tonne is $44.47 at Wine Chateau, but you can find fabulous Morgon, like this Quentin Harel for just $24 at Kermit Lynch or this Domaine Brisson for $27 on Wine.com that gets 93 points from James Suckling.
